The Burke County Board of Education may devote the biggest chunk of time during Monday's board meeting to interviewing candidates for a vacant board seat, but that's not the only thing on the agenda.
The meeting will start at 5:15 p.m. in the Olive Hill Room at the Staff Development Center, 509 W. Concord St.
The series of 15-minute interviews of applicants for the Western District seat is almost the first item on the agenda. The board only will do interviews; no vote on a choice is scheduled.
Presentation of the 2007-08 school-district audit will follow. Later in the meeting the board will discuss publishing an "RFP" (request for proposal) that invites accounting firms to submit bids for performing the 2009-10 audit.
Four items for discussion and possible action are on the agenda. Two are new policies: one of public comments and the other on disruption of meetings. Kim Rudisill will present the Title I budget for approval and Superintendent David Burleson will present a proposed contract with Boys and Girls Club.
Policy coordinator Tim Davis also will present for first reading the recommended updates for chapters one through three in the board's policy manual.
Board member Sam Wilkinson will discuss his proposal that the school board resume a past practice of tape-recording its closed sessions, Burleson will update the board on the budget situation and Assistant Superintendent Tony Cox will report on construction, particularly the start of work on the science labs and classrooms at Freedom and East Burke high schools.
The board will go into closed session at the end of its meeting for discussion of personnel items including retirements and resignations. The board and the school administration hope attrition will reduce the need to lay off staff in anticipation of reduced state financial support.
