Burke County Public Schools Superintendent David Burleson and Finance Director Keith Lawson will be at the county commissioners' budget work session on Monday.
The two are first on the schedule for the meeting starting at 5 p.m. in the county manager's conference room in the Avery Building on Avery Avenue.
Commissioners on Tuesday night received some clarification from county Finance Director Paul Ijames about how the county can divvy out the money to the schools. In years past, Ijames said, the county gave the schools a lump sum and the school board decided how to spend the local money.
Local money pays for things such as utilities, supplies, maintenance, custodial salaries, teachers' supplemental salaries and travel for the school system.
Ijames said the county can budget the money by function, but not by line item.
The schools' share recommended in the proposed county fiscal budget for 2009-10 is $14,249,500. Commissioners have discussed cutting the school's budget to $13.7 million. That doesn't include $200,000 budgeted for school nurses, Ijames noted.
Other departments scheduled to meet with commissioners about budget issues are the board of elections, general services and the tax office on Thursday.
Social services, emergency services and the health department, along with the school district, will meet commissioners on Monday night.
Many departments could lose job positions in the upcoming fiscal year. Commissioners have talked about cutting 24 positions and implementing furlough days — mandatory days off without pay — to help with budget shortfalls.
The board of commissioners will have a public hearing on the budget Tuesday night during its regular meeting in its board room at the General Services building on Green Street.
