The outdoor drama "From This Day Forward" returns to the stage for its 42nd year this summer.
Gennifer Hogan, director of the production this year, is delighted to be working with such a talented cast and is anxiously awaiting the opening night of the show, she said.
The production is in Valdese. The play is about a Protestant group called the Waldenses, who established the oldest Protestant Church in existence and were the first people to settle the town of Valdese. The play traces the history of the Waldenses from their lives in Italy to their new lives in America.
Written and first performed in 1967, "From This Day Forward" was penned by Fred Cranford, who only expected the play to run for seven years. Today, Cranford's production is the third-oldest outdoor drama in North Carolina.
Philip Brendel is a cast member who is in his 32nd year of the production.
"My first year of this production was in 1974," Brendel said. "I enjoyed it so much that I came back each summer to be a part of the show again. The great thing about 'From This Day Forward' is that it is the same story, but it always changes; every year it is a different play."
For this year's show, Hogan is mixing scripts from 1987 and 1996.
"We haven't used this script in a while, so this year will be different," Hogan said.
