A student is facing charges in relation to a bomb threat at East Burke High School on Thursday morning.
Burke County Sheriff John McDevitt said a note was found in a boys bathroom at the school saying there was a bomb in a bathroom and was set to go off. The note didn't say what time the bomb would be set off, McDevitt said.
The note was found around 11:30 a.m., he said.
The school was evacuated, McDevitt said, and detectives and deputies were called to the scene. The gym and school were searched, he said.
When nothing was found, students were moved back into the gym temporarily and detectives interviewed some students, McDevitt said. They had a suspect within several hours of the incident, he said.
Detectives discovered the suspect had already left school. They tracked the suspect to his grandmother's residence, McDevitt said. After being contacted, she brought the student home.
McDevitt said the Sheriff's Office will seek a juvenile petition on the suspect Friday. That means the Sheriff's Office will have to do the paperwork and let Juvenile Services decide how to proceed in the case, he said. Juvenile Services could have the suspect taken into custody or have him come to court to answer the charges, McDevitt said.
