Dan DeHart of Morganton, who was chairman of the Burke County Democratic Party, now is chairman of North Carolina's 10th Congressional District Democratic Party.
In a special meeting Thursday, the district's executive committee chose DeHart to succeed former district chairman Tony McEwen, now a state party officer.
This will be DeHart's second term as district chairman. He served in 1992-93 as chairman of the district that includes all or parts of Burke, Avery, Catawba, Caldwell, Cleveland, Lincoln, Mitchell, Iredell, Gaston and Rutherford counties.
DeHart said one of his first tasks is to work with the district executive committee on finalizing plans for the May 16 district convention at Old Rock School in Valdese.
DeHart's move up to district chairman opens up the chairmanship of the Burke County Democratic Party.
The Burke County Democrats' county convention will begin at 1 p.m. April 18 in the Burke County Agriculture Center. Registration and lunch will start at noon.
DeHart in 2008 was the presidential elector for the 10th Congressional District and cast his electoral vote for Barack Obama at the electoral college meeting Dec. 15 in Raleigh.
DeHart is a magna cum laude graduate of Appalachian State University where he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in secondary education. He holds an educational specialist degree in school administration from Western Carolina University and a doctorate in school administration and political science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
He is a retired principal of Freedom High School in Morganton.
Since retiring, DeHart has worked part-time as a high school consultant with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and in the schools of education at Appalachian State and Western Carolina universities.
