The New Dimensions School's fourth and fifth graders recently returned from the Sound to Sea environmental education camp at Trinity Center, located on Bogue Banks, near Atlantic Beach.
They spent three days and two nights learning about the unique adaptations of plants and animals on the barrier island.
They dissected squids, put on waders and researched life in the sound, took a beach walk with "Turtle Talk," explored the maritime forest, learned about raptors and searched for various forms of life in the brackish pond as just a few of their hands-on adventures.
The Sound to Sea program helps students understand how and why they are tied to the earth.
In addition to recognizing the complex ecosystems across the island, students and teachers further explore their human community.
At the dining table, students learned about food waste and composting.
Ort, a morsel left at a meal, was highly discouraged as the kids learned to put on their plate only what they intended to eat.
Before they left, the students experienced cooperation, teamwork and creative problem-solving techniques through a team-building course that helped them understand how we can all make more of a difference as a group.
The New Dimensions School is Burke County's only K-5 charter school. Visit www.newdimensionschool.org.
