A Morganton girl who has shown special aptitude in mathematics and physics, fields in which boys usually excel, won honorable mention in a statewide high school mathematics contest. Sylvia Fowler, a senior at Morganton High School, was the only girl listed among six top contestants in a competition among 2,610 student participants.
• Debra Tilley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loy Tilley, has started training as an Eastern Air Lines stewardess in Miami, Fla.
• John McKee playing for UNC-CH and Tommy Helms for Wake Forest are two local young men among 60 who played in the Atlantic Coast Conference golf tournament at Chapel Hill.
• Charles R. Fisher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harlon Fisher, has been named Sailor of the Month on the USS Greenwich Bay.
• Bill Davis, a junior at UNC-CH, was elected chairman of the UNC publication board. He is also business manager of the Yackety Yack.

• Martha Jane Earley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Earley, celebrated her 16th birthday with a formal dance at the Community House.
• Linda Walker, a sophomore at Drexel High School, was chosen queen of the Military Ball at N.C. State College.
• Robert D. Walker was elected director of the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers. Rob is a member of the hosiery-making Walker family and has been identified with an industry on which he cut his eyeteeth, business-wise. When asked about his positions in the hosiery business, he replied he was just one of the hired hands.
• Morganton High School's 1959 annual "Song of the South" has been dedicated to Mrs. Myrtle L. Beach. Anne Barbour, editor of the annual and senior class president, and Vernon Winters are shown presenting the annual to Beach. Cost of the book, $4.
• In keeping with the tradition at NCSD of naming dormitory buildings for its superintendents, the board of directors voted to name a new boys dorm Hoffmeyer Hall in honor of Ben E. Hoffmeyer.
• Otis Lambert Jr., a native Morganton, was well received when he sang in Statesville for the final annual performance of the North Carolina Symphony.
• At the Glen Alpine May Day Festival, Frances Crawley was crowned queen and Bob Butler king with Pat Scott as maid of honor. The theme of the event was "The Elf Boy" played by Carolyn McFalls.
• Blanche E. Order became the bride of Kenneth W. Cuthbertson in Gaffney, S.C.
• Clarene Saulman and Tommy Eller tied for valedictorian at Oak Hill High School. Tying for salutatorian were Carol Jean Michaels and Nancy Collins.
• Brenda Corpening, an eighth-grade student at Mountain View, was crowned Queen of May at the May Day program held in Mountain View's auditorium.
• The salutatorian at Olive Hill School is Mary O'Neil and the valedictorians are Josephine Johnson and Algie Maxine Pittman.
