As the school year comes to an end, students start thinking about summer and for many, that means spending time in water.
Local recreation officials are preparing to open pools for the summer.
And the city of Morganton will open the splash pad at Martha's Park on Saturday, said Gary Leonhardt, director of parks and recreation. The splash pad is on a timer and is set to come on at 10 a.m. and stop at 9 p.m., he said.
The stop time could be adjusted to 8:30 p.m., though, said Leonhardt, if they see it's not being used until 9 p.m. The splash pad is free.
Leonhardt said he plans to open Collett Street Recreation pool at 1 p.m. on June 6.
The date this year is a little later than normal, Leonhardt said. He decided to open it later this year because kids don't really start using the pool until school is out for summer. School ends on June 10.

Valdese Recreation Department officials took down the pool bubble at the community center on Tuesday and plan to open for summer swimming Monday. However, the pool will open under the same schedule as if the bubble were still up, said Bret Watson, aquatics director.
Summer hours start June 1, he said.
Registration for summer swim team starts May 29. The cost is $25. Discounts are available for families with more than one child on the team, Watson said.
Daily pool fees, memberships and operating hours can be found at www.ci.valdese.nc.us/aquatics_fitness_center.htm.
The Hildebran/Icard Community Development pool is scheduled to open at noon on June 10, said Mike Orders, president of the East Burke Youth Athletic Organization, which operates the pool.
The pool will be open for private parties and daily swimming, Orders said.
Daily fees are: ages 11 and under, $2; 12 to 18, $3; and adults, $4.
