Saturno: Ask teachers what they want in this election

»  Comments | Post a Comment

On Nov. 3, Burke County will have, in my mind, the most important decision to make in over two decades; that is, filling four seats on the board of education.
As I closely watched and studied the goings on in the past year and a half, I often felt outrage, disbelief and just outright pain in seeing a community that I dearly love, and count myself most fortunate to be a part of, being ripped apart by the decisions of the board majority.
I do believe that most people have made up their minds by now about whom they are going to vote for, but for those that may still be undecided, and for those that may believe that no change is necessary, I have but one request: Ask the teachers!
I am blessed to count many teachers and administrators as friends and I can tell you from my many conversations with them that the vast majority are yearning and pleading for a change in this board's majority. I ask for no one to take my word for this, but instead to make the effort to talk with as many school personnel as possible between now and the election and draw your own conclusion.
I firmly believe that if each voter will make this effort, prior to entering the voting booth, that most will arrive at the same conclusion I have and will therefore vote for Susan Stroup, Sam Wilkinson, Buddy Armour and Catherine Thomas. We owe it to our teachers and more importantly, we owe it to our children.
