The Burke County school board elections weren't the only races happening Tuesday. Voters in municipalities elected two new mayors and re-elected four mayors.
More than 50 percent of Connelly Springs voters cast a ballot for Johnny E. Berry, who will replace current Mayor Carl Greene, who decided not to seek re-election.
Berry received 172 votes, while opponent Terry R. Childers received 125 votes.
Berry, who is finishing his first term as a Connelly Springs Alderman, said he looks forward to working on water, soil and recycling projects.
Karen Robinson ran unopposed for Hildebran Mayor, succeeding current Mayor Wendell Hildebrand.
Tim M. Suttles challenged Glen Alpine Mayor Christine Abernathy, but she managed to win a second term with 211 votes. Suttles won 117 votes.
Abernathy said she wanted to continue "looking after the well being and safety of Glen Alpine."
John Pascal couldn't hold off incumbent opponent Valdese Mayor Jim Hatley. Hatley received a resounding 938 votes to Pascal's 124.
Incumbent Drexel Mayor R.E. Propst and incumbent Rutherford College Mayor Jimmy O. Huffman Sr. ran unopposed and were re-elected.
Elected Connelly Springs Aldermen are incumbent W. Kevin Duckworth, Kimberly Berry Sigmon and Carroll W. Turner.
Elected Drexel Aldermen are Carroll Franklin and incumbent Danny P. Ritchie.
Elected Glen Alpine Aldermen are Bob Benfield, Kevin Herron and David Webb.
All three incumbents in the Hildebran Council race were re-elected. Mike Orders, Michael Stroupe and Emily Williamson will return to the council.
Elected Rutherford College Council members are incumbent Jennifer Abernethy, Yates Jensen Jr. and incumbent Gary McClure.
Voters in Valdese re-elected Gary Delp, Susan Stevenson and John F. Black for the town council.
