n The children of South Mountain Institute are winners of a turkey shoot sponsored by Chesterfield Ruritan Club. Fred Ramsey won two turkeys and donated them to South Mountain Institute.
n Directors of the Morganton Chamber of Commerce have reaffirmed their stand in favor of fluoridation of the city's water supply.
n The Rev. R. Knolan Benfield, pastor of First Baptist Church, delivered the sermon for the opening of the North Carolina State Baptist Convention.
n President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower sent flowers to the funeral of Olin M. Avery, 89, of Morganton. Avery's son, Isaac M. Avery, is a member of the White House maintenance staff and personally acquainted with the Eisenhowers. Clyde Small, local florist, said that since he had been in business he has handled flower orders from every president except Eisenhower and this order made a perfect record.
n B. Riley Fowler, vocational agriculture teacher at Salem High, says he doesn't remember ever having seen as much sprouting corn in the fields as the warm and humid autumn brought.
n Mr. Claude Turner was honored with a surprise birthday dinner celebrating his 80th birthday.
n Eight retired veterans of the U.S. Postal Service received certificates of recognition from Uncle Sam. They are Finley Clarke, W.P. Anderson, Alexander L. Shuping,William Mabe, Ira E. Smith, R.M. Garrison, Edward Lane and Eubert Setzer.
n Seen/Heard in Drexel: John Ramsey and his men pouring a concrete sidewalk in front of the Bob Burns home… More Baptists than Methodists eating supper in the cafeteria at Zion Memorial Church… Halsie Baker raking leaves off her father-in-law's lawn… Sue Cozort walking down the street eating ice cream... R.L.Davis in the post office waiting for The News Herald to arrive… Eleanor Huffman with her right arm in a cast… A turquoise Chevrolet Corvair in Verna Berry's driveway.
n Mr. and Mrs. J. Grayson Storey were among the Gold Star parents honored at the ninth annual banquet sponsored by the Table Rock Post of Veterans of Foreign War.
n Members of the Morganton Police Department and their wives paid tribute to three veteran officers who retired. They are Russell Greene, Hardie McGalliard and J.P. "Pink" Gibbs. They had a steak dinner in the private dining room at Dude's Drive In.
n Sara Harbison, freshman at High Point College, has been cast in the Tower Players' production of the musical comedy "Guys and Dolls." Also appearing in the show is Robert E. Winters Jr. of Morganton.
n Six charming little misses were observed serving refreshments at the new Forest Hill School during open house. They are Mimi Kirby, Susan Ward, Mary Phifer, Elaine Hudson, Marriane Baldau and Susan Ervin.
n Mrs. Trudy Helminger, Gray Lady chairman of the American Red Cross, announced Gray Lady training will be held at Broughton Hospital.
n Wesley Parker has made molasses for 25 years. He uses the vapor system and can produce 30 gallons in a day. He sells molasses all over the United States.
n Eight seniors with the Olive Hill Yellow Jackets played their last game for the team. They will graduate in the spring. They are Lonnie Jenkins, Felix Brittain, Billy Surratt, Joe Johnson, Edward Robinson, Thomas Max, Tommy Conley and Harold Canipe.
n Edwina Moses proudly wears pins denoting perfect Sunday school attendance for the past 13 years. She is a member of North Morganton Methodist Church.
n Bits from J. Gordon Queen: Every Morgantonian should become a member of the Morganton High School Band Boosters Club, cost $1… "Little Jack's Puppet Show" station wagon parked in front of the Morganton Grill…. Ginny Shankle greeting friends with a smile.
