Avery: America must defeat terrorists in Afghanistan

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Early this morning, Oct. 29, our commander in chief, President Obama, made a surprise visit to Dover Air Force Base to take part in the return of 18 Americans killed in Afghanistan. President Obama boarded the C-17 cargo plane accompanied by an Air Force chaplain who led a prayer. He then stood at attention at the base of the plane's loading ramp as the flag-draped transfer case carrying a slain soldier was brought out of the plane.
The previous administration not only banned media coverage of dead troops coming home, George W. Bush never once visited Dover to participate in a transfer.
I am glad to know we now have a true leader who is not insulated from the ultimate sacrifices of our brave men and women in service. President Obama is obviously thinking very hard and praying about what to do in Afghanistan.
I want to encourage the president and my fellow citizens to do the same, to continue the fight in Afghanistan and Pakistan against the Taliban and to commit the troops and resources to get the job done.
Our country is great because the founders decided at its inception that religion and political power do not bode well for freedom when combined. Our revolution was not only fought for political and economic freedom, but freedom against ecclesiastical tyranny as well. If we are to be a light to the world, we must never forget to be vigilant against theocracy, the confluence of political power and religious dogma.
We know the terrorists that attacked America on Sept. 11, 2001, were supported by the Taliban and they would not give up Osama bin Laden, and this led to the invasion of Afghanistan. We cannot afford to have Afghanistan come under the control of these religious extremists ever again. We cannot fail.
