Look through the half-truths
I find it very interesting that on Oct. 29 the tone and authors of all of the letters on the Opinion page carried a very negative voice.
Tim Buff brought up several points, but they all were not totally truthful. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement did not state which finding was major or minor. Buff was correct in his statement that past boards had not finished their work, but failed to mention the other SACS CASI findings were all the responsibility of the current board. Buff spoke of attempting to bully and intimidate; he did not mention the times he slammed his fist on the table, pointed at someone in the crowd and mockingly laughed at them. Talk about disruptive!
Rob Hairfield questioned the moral issues, personal values and and honesty of those running against board Chair Norman. Who are you, Mr. Hairfield, to question anybody's personal values or moral issues. You have no voice in that forum, Mr. Hairfield.
Larry Thurston has, on several occasions, mentioned his fellow Vietnam veterans. When did you serve in Vietnam, Mr. Thurston? I served my country proudly for 23 years and I flew helicopters in Vietnam for two years. I have voted and strongly supported Buddy Armour and Sam Wilkinson, as well as Susan Stroup and Catherine Thomas.
I worked and coached with Sam Wilkinson at East Burke. I found him to be a man of character and integrity. I would be honored to have Sam in my foxhole any day.
While teaching at East Burke, I noted that Buddy Armour never failed to be at a school function. He always was visible and supportive of the school, the students and staff.
We need to look through the half-truths of those who choose to deceive. Give our schools people of integrity and character.
