Eighteen budding musicians have hit an early high note in their musical pursuits.
The Table Rock Middle School Jazz Band has been honored with an invitation to play at this year's North Carolina Music Educators Association annual conference in Winston-Salem on Monday.
The band will perform in the South Main Hall 7-8 of the Benton Convention Center at 2 p.m.
The 18 band students are under the leadership of Robert Johnston. Johnston, a former student at TRMS bands himself, is in his fifth year as director of bands at the school. Johnston continued his music education at Freedom High School and Western Carolina University.
Johnston said the invitation to the conference is the only one for a North Carolina middle school band, and the only for a Burke County school this year. "It's a big deal; a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me," Johnston said. "We've gone all out."
The band will perform all jazz standards for the concert. Music from Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman are among tunes on the playlist.
The band welcomes two guest artists, Randy Ingold and Rich Willey. Ingold, who will accompany the band on saxophone, is an awarded professional musician and currently director of bands at Alexander Central High School in Taylorsville. Jazz trumpet player and composer Rich Willey, who's colorful career in music includes touring with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, lives in Asheville and teaches at both UNC-Asheville and Clemson University.
The TRMS Jazz Band members are: Josh Tubito and Megan Mathes on alto sax; Thaddeus Shell and Aki'Qula Mills on tenor sax; Nicholas Wardwell, tenor sax; Farley Price, Jordan Clontz, Lucas Huffman and Phillip Hang on trumpet; Warren Bristol, Steven Leonhardt, Cassidy Owens and Eric Burnett on trombone; Brenden Caldwell, drum set; Zachary Hawkins, upright bass; Heather Duffey, piano; Sam Shelden; guitar; Thomas Rapp, vibes.
