For weeks many of us in Valdese have been politely gathering signatures for the right to put on the ballot a vote, yes or no, to sell alcohol.
Many people who signed our petition were non-drinkers who simply understood the importance of a free election and the right to vote yes or no. In any case, those of us who have actively been participating have thanked the people for their time regardless of whether they signed the petition or not.
It seems ironic that some of the biggest opponents to this form of democracy are the same people who have been elected to state offices by an election or a simple show of hands between church officials. We have heard all sorts of reasons for not signing, from, "Jesus would not give out that rotten wine" (my personal favorite), to the notion that biblical wine was not fermented, to more legitimate concerns. Meanwhile, we smile and say thanks anyway.
One man wrote in this newspaper that we were stupid, self righteous, working for Satan and, oh, yes, keeping children from receiving toys from Walmart. Someone stole a sign from my yard that simply told people where they could sign up.
People in Valdese, we are not living in the middle of the desert 50 miles from the nearest town. Let's at least retain the revenue that is already being collected elsewhere and keep it for our town and keep free elections intact.
