The Table Rock District of the Boy Scouts of America is keeping about 1,000 boys busy Saturday and the following weekend as it engages in its 19th annual Scouting for Food Good Turn.
Alan Clark, the chairman of the district's Scouting for Food Good Turn, said the scouts will hand out door hangers Saturday with a note about the project.
Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable items, such as canned or boxed goods.
On Nov. 21, the scouts will return to the same neighborhoods and collect the bags.
Last year, Burke County scouts collected approximately 26,000 pounds of food. The donated food goes to Burke United Christian Ministries.
"The scouts is one of the best character-building programs for young men and young women so it's a great opportunity for them to serve the community," Clark said. "And it's an easy, simple way for the community to support the food drive."
Shane Arrowood, the local scouting professional for Burke County, said the Table Rock District distributes the bags throughout Burke County, but the Piedmont Council would distribute bags in 11 counties.
The good turn not only provides food for hungry local residents, Arrowood said, but also helps the community focus on solving ongoing hunger issues.
