A 78-year-old woman died Friday from injuries she received after a vehicle struck her on West Union Street.

Caroline Huntle Riddle, 78, of 402 W. Union St., was crossing the street in front of her home when a red SUV traveling west struck her, sending her 40 to 50 feet away from the point of impact.

Riddle was transported to Grace Hospital and immediately airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The driver, Amy Absher, 46, of 5133 Johns River Road told officers that the sun was in her eyes, which prevented her from seeing Riddle.

The incident is still under investigation, officials said.

The accident Friday was one of four incidents involving a vehicle striking a pedestrian this week.

On Saturday, a 4-year-old boy was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center after a Jeep Liberty struck him.

Janette Stamey, 72, of 4634 Doublehead Drive had just finished washing her car and was backing it into the driveway, North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Baker said. The left rear tire ran over the boy.

On Tuesday, Donald Ray Pearson, 59, of 3167 Clark Loop, No. 4, was driving a city of Morganton vehicle on Vine Arden Road when he struck David Sparks, 55, of 401 Center St., Apt. B.

According to the Morganton Department of Public Safety traffic report, Pearson was making a left turn onto Vine Arden Road from Center Street.

Pearson told officers he saw Sparks standing on the side of the road, but did not see him cross the road.

Sparks remains hospitalized at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. The accident is still under investigation.

A fourth incident, a hit-and-run on Bouchelle Street earlier this week, is still under investigation. Further information was not available at presstime.
