If you're ready to catch the Christmas spirit, now that the Thanksgiving is behind us, a number of events this week in Burke County will help put you in a merry way.
The week's lineup begins with the Downtown Morganton Christmas parade at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Favorite cartoon characters, floats and Santa Claus will be on the streets around the Historic Burke County Courthouse. The Downtown Morganton Development Association sponsors the parade.
The 35th annual J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center Parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Morganton. This year's theme is "Christmas in the Movies."
Friday's events include the Hildebran Community Festival of Lights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Albert L. Parkhurst Municipal Complex (the old Hildebran High School). The show includes the Hildebran Elementary School Chorus, a community choir singing Christmas carols, City Rhythm Jazz Band, lighting of the memorial Christmas tree and Santa Claus.
On Saturday, the Valdese Christmas Parade begins at 10 a.m and the Icard Township Fire/Rescue Department and Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the 2009 Hildebran Christmas Parade at 1 p.m.
Also on Saturday, Santa Claus will fly into the Foothills Regional Airport around 11 a.m. Children of all ages are welcome to visit the jolly old elf. The event sponsored by Foothills Regional Aviation is free. The airport is on Antioch Road, 2.4 miles from N.C. 18/U.S. 64 between Morganton and Lenoir.
On Sunday, the Glen Alpine Woman's Club will light a memorial tree for loved ones at 3 p.m. in Glen Alpine.
All of those events are open to public.
Elementary school children and parents are invited to the Burke County Public Schools' Foreign Language Christmas Festival from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday in Freedom High School's cafeteria. Children will be able to learn about Christmas traditions in France, Germany and Spain; to make holiday crafts from each culture; to eat homemade baked goods; and to sing carols in different languages. St. Nicholas will be there, too.
