With East Burke playing three in county teams this season, the Cavs head football coach, Mike Biggerstaff, told his players to think of having three Fat Friday games.
After Friday's 32-0 win over Draughn High School, the Cavs completed a sweep of the other county high schools to win the unofficial Burke County Championship.
East Burke defeated both Patton and Freedom in non-conference games earlier in the season.
The shutout over Draughn raises the Cavaliers record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A. Draughn fell to 0-5, 0-2.
The Cavs got scoring from both their offense and defense. Eric Carson scored two touchdowns for East Burke, while running mate Kenneth Gaither ran one touchdown. A fumble recovery by Jacob Withers set up a Justin Powell field goal and Tyler Blackwood tackled Draughn's Camden Young in the end zone for a safety. Blackwood also had three sacks in the game.
The big play of the game came on East Burke's first possession. Justin Lail passed to Josh Debro for a 60-yard touchdown on the Cavs first offensive play. Powell's kick gave the Cavs a 7-0 lead with 10:08 to play in the first quarter.
"It was supposed to be a hitch pattern," said East Burke coach Mike Biggerstaff. "But they squeezed us and the kids made a change on the field and hit a home run."
After that initial pass play East Burke stuck mostly to its ground game. The Cavs drove 50 yards on seven plays to score again in the first quarter. Carson gained 30 of those yards, including the last five on his first touchdown run of the night.
East Burke's next possession yielded another touchdown. The 62-yard drive was capped by a 1-yard run by Carson. But Powell's point after kick was blocked by Draughn's defense.
Withers' fumble recovery at the Draughn 6-yard line led to Powell kicking a 28-yard field goal to give the Cavs a 23-0 halftime lead.
The Cavs defense held Draughn to only 26 yards rushing and eight yards passing in the first half.
East Burke's defense put points on the board late in the third quarter. Blackwood tackled Young in the end zone along with help from D.J. Moore and Caleb Huffman. Gaither finished the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run.
"East Burke is probably as good a team as there is around here," said Draughn coach Scott Lambert. "I am proud of our kids. They're young but they don't back down."
