East Burke head coach Katie Gravel knew the short game was going to be critical in Monday's four-team matchup at Orchard Hills Golf Club in Cajah's Mountain.
But the weather was the most challenging aspect in the round. With temperatures hovering in the low 60s and a light rain falling throughout most of the afternoon, the Lady Cavs battled through the elements to notch an 11-stroke victory.
"It was cold and wet, but the girls stepped up to the conditions and did enough to pull out a win," an elated Gravel said.
East Burke posted a first-place score of 150. Patton claimed second (161) while Freedom finished third (170) and Draughn fourth (172).
East Burke sophomore Marianne Burris captured medalist honors with a 5-over par round of 42. The Lady Cavaliers' Bridget Abee carded her best round of the season with a 52 while Dakota Crapps equaled her best round with a 56.
East Burke's other scores included Lauren Church's 59, along with 64s from Kristen Church, Taylor Newman, Taylor Stowe and Madison Weaver.
Patton was led by MK McKinney's round of 53. Teammates Kerri Carswell and Cassi Saunders posted 54s for the Lady Panthers.
Other scores for Patton were Kaitlin Berry (56), Temple Cook (57), Carolina Bowers (61) and Emma Miller (62). Saunders and Berry posted their best rounds of the season.
Freedom slipped in the overall team standings to third for the season with a sub-par performance. The Lady Patriots were led by junior Katie Reid's round of 47. Erin Phillips carded a 59 while the rest of the squad faded on the chilly afternoon.
Baby Evitt, Megan Parlier and Jennifer Whisnant each shot 64s.
Draughn only finished two shots out of third place. The Lady Wildcats' top three scorers all posted personal bests on the season. Sophomore Katie Martin shot a 56 while Taylar Kiser carded a 57 and sophomore lefty Molly Murray strolled to a round of 59 on the Lady Cats' home course.
Draughn senior Kristen Murray settled for a 60 while freshman teammate Katie Lambert fired a round of 63. Murray is tied for fourth overall in the individual yearly standings for the Burke County High School Women's Golf League.
All teams will be back in action today with a 3:30 p.m. tee off at Silver Creek Golf Plantation.
