In the first game of the second half of the South Mountain Athletic Conference schedule, Patton High's soccer team beat Chase 3-1. The game took place at the Catawba River Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.
After about 30 minutes of scoreless play Patton's Vince Thao scored off an assist from Jeremiah Kirk to put the Panthers up 1-0.
Patton had a number of other opportunities, but they were not able to cash in on any before the halftime whistle blew.
About five minutes into the second half, Chase evened the score with a long range goal that rattled around inside the vertical goal post before finding the back of the net.
Patton answered back 12 minutes later when Julio Flores scored to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage. They added another goal later in the half when Ethan Smith assisted on a goal by Oscar Velasquez.
Patton's goalkeeper Jake Duncan finished with two saves while Chase keeper Tyler Harth tallied nine.
It may not have been pretty, but when all was said and done, Patton was able to hang on and capture its ninth win of the season.
"Well, we started off very slow. Of course, we were real banged up from the other night, so we had several who were out tonight and some that, you know, played just to get started, and then came right back out," Patton head coach Keith Scott said.
Despite the slow start, Scott seemed pleased with the play of his team in the second half, including his reserves.
"We had a lot of substitutes that stepped up and played tonight, and we played much better the second half. I think the intensity finally kicked in a little bit and we picked it up, But overall, it was a win, so we'll take that right now."
Patton (9-5-2, 4-1-2 SMAC) is back in action tonight as it visits Fred T. Foard. Game time is at 7 p.m.
