It might be a new shop for Glen Alpine, but the owners are more than a novice when it comes to offering a little something sweet.
James and Betty Tinney recently opened the J&B Ice Cream Shoppe. "My husband and I decided about six months ago that Glen Alpine needed an ice cream shop," Betty Tinney said.
The couple who also owns Cookies and Cream in the Boone Mall, once owned and operated 21 Sweet and Nutty Shops in the Northwest. Their most recent endeavor is located at 103 B Main St. in the heart of Glen Alpine.
The Tinneys had an ice cream shop in Glen Alpine about six years ago, but with other businesses to run, Betty said they were more important at the time. Now in retirement, the couple wanted something more to do so they enjoy their days together at the ice cream shop.
Their grand opening coincided with the Glen Alpine Festival one week ago and business has been steady. "It is going to be really good this time. Everybody likes ice cream winter or summer," she said.
J&B serves Hershey brand, hand-dipped ice cream and also creates milkshakes, sundaes and smoothies along with offering cookies and hot beverages. The 16 different flavors can be dipped up in cups, cake or waffle cones or smashed between two cookies, called a dozer.
All-time favorites for children include birthday cake, cotton candy and for adults watching their sugar and fat intake J&B's has low-fat and no-sugar options.
Betty said their shop will offer free ice cream specials for holidays including Mother's Day and Father's Day. As the weather cools, patrons can enjoy a cup of hot coffee, tea or flavored coffees.
"We hope to have pastries, too," Betty added.
"The people seem to be excited that we are here," she said.
Glen Alpine Town Clerk, Eva Moses stopped in for a treat and said, "We are excited to see new businesses in Glen Alpine."
"I love what I do, and I'm a people person. I like my customers and every time someone comes in I want them to feel comfortable," Betty said.
"I have been in retail business for 30 years, but my first job was a candy girl in a theater," she said. That's where she met her husband, James, of 56 years. He was her boss then, she added.
"I worked for ABC Theaters and ran theaters up and down the East Coast," he said.
Working through retirement, the Tinneys agree it's better than becoming a couch potato. The couple occasionally splits a shift at the shop. "We both needed something else to do," she said.
The J&B Ice Cream Shoppe is open 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
