Seats in some town council races in Burke County are up for grabs this year.
The town of Glen Alpine has three seats open on the board of aldermen, but none of the incumbents sought re-election, so there will be new faces on the five-member board. The candidates are Bob Benfield, John D. Bowles, James "Shay" Francis, Kevin Herron and David Webb.
Glen Alpine Mayor Christine Abernathy is being challenged by Tim Suttles, who tried unsuccessfully to unseat Abernathy four years ago. Suttles' bid was challenged because part of his home wasn't in the town limits. However, the elections board determined that Suttles himself lived in town, so he could finish his election bid. Suttles' home has since been annexed fully into the town limits, say election officials.
Connelly Springs Mayor Carl Greene isn't running for re-election. A current council member, Terry Childers, will go toe-to-toe with challenger Johnny Berry for the seat.
With Childers running for mayor, that leaves his seat on the board of aldermen without an incumbent. Two incumbents, Kevin Duckworth and Ramona Duncan, are seeking re-election. Others running for the three seats are April Good, Charles "Chuck" Mann, Kimberly Berry Sigmon, Carroll Turner and David Wortman.
In the town of Hildebran, unopposed Karen Robinson is a shoo-in for mayor, unless there's unexpected competition from a write-in candidate. Robinson is a council member whose term doesn't expire until 2011, so the town council would have to appoint someone to fill her unexpired term once she takes over as mayor.
The incumbents seeking re-election to three seats on the Hildebran town council are unopposed. They are Mike Orders, Michael Stroupe and Emily Williamson.
Three incumbents also seek re-election to the Rutherford College Town Council. They are Jennifer Abernethy, Yates Jensen Jr. and Gary McClure. Gerald Smith also is seeking one of the seats.
In Drexel, two seats are open on the board of aldermen. Incumbents Allen Reed and Danny Ritchie want to be re-elected. Carroll Franklin also is in the race.
Drexel incumbent Mayor Richard Propst is unopposed in his bid for re-election.
Valdese Mayor Jim Hatley is running for re-election and being challenged by John Pascal. Gary Delp, named to occupy Granville Morrow's seat earlier this year after Morrow died unexpectedly, is running unopposed for the Ward 1 council seat in Valdese. Incumbent council members Susan Stevenson in Ward 2 and Chip Black in Ward 3 are unopposed in their bids for re-election.
