The Old Colony Players are bringing a classic to the stage as they perform Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Sound of Music."
Director Edyth Pruitt said the production is one of the biggest undertakings for the Old Colony Players.
"It's a very big show with big sets and many, many costumes," Pruitt said. "It's a big musical and requires a whole lot of talent."
Two months of work will pay off beginning this weekend. The Old Colony Players will present "The Sound of Music" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and on Oct. 23 and 24 and at 3 p.m. Sunday and Oct. 25 in the Old Rock School, 400 W. Main St.
Based on Maria von Trapp's memoir, "The Sound of Music" follows the Von Trapp family in Austria as World War II looms.
"This story is one that talks about love and faith overcoming adversity," Pruitt said. "It's really a story that speaks to the human spirit."
Old Colony Players General Manager Vickie Hyde said the cast and crew have come a long way since they began in August.
"They've worked so hard on the set," Hyde observed.
The sets are larger than usual, Pruitt explained.
The group borrowed some costumes from area theater groups and the numerous costume changes add to the show's complexity for both performers and the back-stage crew.
"It's a much bigger show than the Old Colony Players has ever tried before," Pruitt said. "It's very music intensive. We have nuns singing in Latin and 7-year-olds with solos."
Hyde said, "It has amazed me at the talent that is in this (production)."
Pruitt credited music director Marny Taber for "bringing out the best in people."
"I really think it's going to be one of the best shows the Old Colony Players has seen in a long time," Pruitt said. "It's just beautiful and the cast is so wonderful."
