For Dylan Clay Brown, 19, living with cerebral palsy hasn't stopped him from pursuing his dreams. Brown graduated from Patton High School in June and isn't content to live a life of leisure.
Brown wrote, "I was born with cerebral palsy, which made my work a little harder, but I was always encouraged by all my family members and friends to reach for the stars ... ART ZOO12 is the next star that I am reaching for."
His mother Patti Roehrig said Brown started painting with acrylics in June with his aunt, which led to his current venture: ART ZOO12 Studio.
Now Brown is painting, occasionally with the help of his mother and his one-on-one Danver Robinson, on a regular basis, Roehrig said. Some of his artwork is hanging at Bank of Granite and Fatz Cafe.
With bright and eager eyes, Brown said his favorite part of painting is decorating the canvas. His pieces are abstract and often feature an array of colors.
Wearing and apron and armed with a brush, Brown was found outdoors last week starting a new painting. Dark blue acrylic paint streaked across the canvas.
Brown sold several paintings during the Historic Morganton Festival, and other buyers have commissioned him for particular pieces.
Roehrig said Brown "really wants to be independent. He wants to show people what he can do."
