»  Comments | Post a Comment

Shiloh A.M.E. Church will observe Men's Day on Saturday and Sunday.
A 100 Men in Black program will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Men from other churches and organizations, such as Masonic, Elks and fraternities are invited to join with Shiloh's men.
Hartland Church of God Men's Choir will sing, too.
The speaker will be Theodis Beck, retired secretary of the N.C. Department of Correction. Beck, a Buncombe County native, is a 1970 graduate of N.C. Central University where he earned a B.A. in sociology. He was the first probation and parole officer to rise through the ranks to become secretary of the department.
His DOC career began in 1975 as a probation and parole officer. He served in various positions over the years and was the first African-American to head the Division of Adult Probation and Parole.
In 1997 he was the first African-American named deputy secretary. Appointed by Gov. James B. Hunt in April 1999, Beck served as secretary of the DOC until his January 2009 retirement.
The Rev. B. F. Humphrey Jr. will be the guest preacher at 11 a.m. Sunday. Born in Kinston, he is a graduate of Kittrell Junior College in Kittrell and Harris Barber College in Raleigh. In the ministry for 55 years, his pastorate in the Western N.C. Conference of the A.M.E. church included several years at both Willow Tree and Gaston Chapel in Morganton. He retired from active pastoral duties in June 2009.
The Men's Day observance will conclude with a Gospel Fest at 4 p.m. Several choirs and singing groups will participate.
