East Burke bounced back from its first conference loss to Newton-Conover last week to take a 52-8 win over visiting West Caldwell Friday night in a Catawba Valley Athletic 2A Conference game.
"Our guys came out ready to play," said East Burke coach Mike Biggerstaff. "It was good to bounce back from a tough game we thought we could have won.
"Turnovers were a big part of this game," said Biggerstaff. "They gave us a short field and opportunities to score."
The Cavs scored six touchdowns and a field goal in the first half. Two of those touchdowns were a result of West Caldwell turnovers.
East Burke started the fireworks with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Josh Debro to start the game. Justin Powell kicked the first of seven PAT kicks to give the Cavs a 7-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.
The Cavs defense held West Caldwell after East Burke's Vince Ward sacked Warriors quarterback Ryan Corpening to set up a fourth down punt. East Burke took over at the West Caldwell 40 yard line and needed just four plays to score its second touchdown of the game.
The big play on the short drive was a 29-yard pass completion from Justin Lail to Eric Carson. Dustin Wilson then carried the ball the final nine yards for his first touchdown of the night.
East Burke pinned the Warriors deep in their own territory on the ensuing kickoff. Six plays later Corpening fumbled and Caleb Huffman recovered for East Burke. But two plays later East Burke fumbled and Jarron Johnson recovered for the Warriors.
Another West Caldwell fumble gave the Cavs the ball at the 24 yard line. Wilson scored on a 24-yard run to give East Burke a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
East Burke linebacker Josh Duckworth set up the Cavs next touchdown with a pass interception and return. After a penalty on the play the ball was spotted at the West Caldwell 27. Kenneth Gaither finished a 5-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.
The Cavs held West Caldwell on three plays and forced another punt. Lail rushed for 30 yards then passed to Debro for an 18-yard touchdown.
East Burke's defense accounted for the next touchdown. Brandon Marshall's punt was blocked by Gaither and recovered by Alex Davidson who ran it in from the three yard line.
Mark Setzer set up the final East Burke score with a 43-yard run late in the second quarter. Powell booted his second field goal of the year from 25 yards out as the first half ended.
Both teams scored once in the second half. West Caldwell put together a 13-play drive which covered 72 yards. Julian Parsons and Tylor Witherspoon carried the load on the drive. Witherspoon finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Setzer reeled off a 54-yard run in the fourth quarter for East Burke. Quarterback Timmy Page finished the drive with a 3-yard run.
East Burke (3-1, 6-2) goes on the road next week at Maiden. West Caldwell (0-4, 1-7) returns home to face Bunker Hill.
