Panthers win season finale

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Patton High's Lady Panther volleyball team put an exclamation point on their great season on Thursday by winning in straight sets over East Rutherford.
Patton, having already clinched the first South Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball title, added a final victory to its regular season mark and finished 10-2.
Scores in the 3-0 match were 25-19, 25-21 and 25-19.
Game 1 started very close, but strong digs from sophomore Sarah Milner and big time spikes from junior Courtney Causby saw the Lady Panthers pull away down the stretch for the win.
Game 2 showed Coach Sarena Fuller what her Lady Panthers were really about.
"East Rutherford came out strong on their senior night with a run of five aces and four kills," Fuller said. "Patton was down 10-19 when one of our senior captains, Sarah King, was hit with a ball and had to leave with a bloody nose. Due to substitution rules, we were forced to play with only five girls. Though they were down nine points and one player, those five girls held nothing back and came back for the 25-21 win."
After the Game 2 comeback, Patton took control of the match in Game 3, despite the scrappy defense of the Lady Cavaliers. East made it tough with some long rallies, but Patton closed out the match.
"I am so proud of this team — the poise and control they've shown in the past four games, their intensity and focus and their teamwork have made this season successful," Fuller said. "They are a great group. We are exactly where we wanted to be, playing our best volleyball going into the playoffs."
By finishing first in the conference, the Lady Panthers will have a No. 1 seed going into the first round of the state volleyball playoffs which start on Saturday. Patton will host the No. 4 seed from the Big South Conference.
