Two days into early voting, almost 2,000 voters have cast their ballots.
The Burke County Board of Elections reported at 3 p.m. Friday that 1,630 votes had been cast.
Board of Elections Director Greer Suttlemyre said the first day of voting (Thursday) was busy but had slowed down Friday.
The turnout so far has been above average for a non-presidential election cycle, Suttlemyre said.
In 2007, a total of 8,096 voters turned out for the municipal and Burke County Board of Education elections.
The high turnout isn't a surprise, as the months-long controversy surrounding the Burke County Board of Education has spurred community action.
Eight people seeking four district seats remain in the race, and voters throughout the county cast ballots in all four races.
Several candidates have dropped out of the school board race, but their names will still appear on the ballots.
Those candidates include Craeg Hanson (Central District), Elizabeth Peterson (Western District, unexpired term), Justin Tate (Western District) and Dianne Brittain Mobley (Eastern District).
In addition to the school board candidates, the early voting ballots will include the voter's own local candidates for municipal races.
The Burke County Board of Elections moved at the end of September from 201 W. Meeting St. to the Foothills Higher Education Center at 2128 S. Sterling St. Both locations are open for early voting from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 30 and 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is Oct. 27 and the return deadline is 5 p.m Nov. 2.
People can register to vote and vote at the same time during early voting, according to election officials. The person must show a form of identification and proof of address. Election day is Nov. 3.
