The winning streak continues for the Draughn High boys soccer team.
Draughn is 12-0 in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference after a 1-0 win Monday in Newton over Newton-Conover High.
A first half knee injury to Tommy Yang forced Draughn to make some changes in the lineup but that didn't slow down the Wildcats.
Draughn goalkeeper Yeng Yang recorded two first-half saves and the strong defense of Ansel Clayton and Sa Thao kept the Red Devils away from the goal, leading to a scoreless first half.
In the first 20 minutes of the second half, Newton wanted to get off to a fast start, attempting three shots at goal. Yang, however, stayed strong in goal recording the save on each of those shots.
The breakthrough for Draughn came with 10 minutes left as Thomas Russell got the header for the winning goal off a corner kick from Jarod Zopp.
"I was very proud of our effort tonight. We had a few opportunities to give up, especially when Tommy went down, but the guys fought through it and came away with a great result against a very good team," Draughn head coach Josh Martin said.
Draughn (13-6-1, 11-0 CVAC) looks to continue the winning streak, and keep the undefeated conference record, today at home versus West Caldwell High. The JV contest starts at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.. It is also senior night for the Wildcats. Free admission is offered for today's key CVAC contest.
