Traffic is blocked on Interstate 40 eastbound between Exits 123 and 125 after a wreck that seriously injured at least two people.
The U.S. 321 exit onto I-40 east at exit 123 also is blocked, police said.
A helicopter landed, blocking both lanes around mile marker 124, around 3 p.m.
Another helicopter was on its way to Catawba Valley Medical Center to treat someone wounded in the crash, police said.
Two people were trapped inside vehicles, according to emergency scanner traffic.
A number of fire trucks, EMS and other emergency vehicles converged on the scene. Visible from the interstate bridge over Brookford was a large truck in the grassy median.
