As a young girl, Washington traveled all over with world with her parents.
Her father was a wonderful storyteller, she says. He taught her Arthurian legends and Greek mythology by telling the stories in the first person.
She often wondered if he wasn't really centuries and new Merlin, Arthur and the Greek gods. She spent from second to sixth grade in Seoul, South Korea. It was during these years that her parents adopted three Amer-Asian children. Through it all, she learned about different people, places and of course, learned their stories.
Washington attended Northwestern University and was involved with many theatrical productions. It was at this time that storytelling reemerged as something she wanted to learn more about. In the four years she was there, she began to make storytelling a central part of her performance life.
She has written three children's books: "A Pride of African Tales," "The Story of Kwanzaa," and "A Big Spooky House." A fourth book, "L'il Rabbit's Kwanzaa" is in process. She also is a gifted recording artist and has won many awards, including the 2002, 2004, and 2006 Parent's Choice Silver Awards as well as the 2006 Storytelling World Honors Award.
Washington has performed at hundreds of schools, libraries and storytelling festivals across the country. She also offers workshops in storytelling, writing, education and creative drama for librarians and educators as well.
She resides in Durham with her husband and manager, David Klibanow.
