East Burke's powerful ground game was more than Maiden could overcome Friday night as the Cavaliers posted a 42-0 win over the Blue Devils in Catawba Valley 2A Conference football action.
The Cavs scored once in the first quarter to take the lead. Then East Burke put up 21 points in the second quarter to put the game away and scored once each in the third and fourth periods.
Meanwhile the East Burke defense was holding Maiden to mostly three-and-out series on offense. The Blue Devils were without the services of starting quarterback Matt Johnson who was injured last week. Cody Beal stood in for Johnson to lead the Maiden attack.
"My hat's off to Cody," Maiden coach Brian Brown said. "Beal stepped into a tough situation and played well on both sides of the ball.
"They (East Burke) were the one thing we were not, physical up front. They just beat us up. If you can't win in the trenches, you can't win on the scoreboard."
Maiden expected to face a stiff running game by East Burke. The Cavs gained 401 yards on the ground, scoring four touchdowns. But East Burke also mixed in a passing game that accounted for two more touchdowns and 134 yards of its total 535 yards of offense.
The Cavs started things off with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Justin Lail to Josh Debro. Then East Burke's offense stalled, missing a 35-yard field goal attempt on its second possession. The Cavs then punted on their third possession.
East Burke's defense protected the seven-point lead until the Cavs could get on the scoreboard again. The defense held the Blue Devils to four consecutive three-and-out series and allowed only five yards of offense during those series. Maiden had only two first downs in the half, with one of those coming on an East Burke penalty.
The Cavs broke the game open at the start of the second quarter. East Burke scored three times in the quarter and held a 28-0 lead at halftime. Dustin Wilson ran a 40-yard touchdown early in the quarter. Then Lail passed to Joseph Jacomine for a 47-yard touchdown play. Wilson capped the first half scoring with a 31-yard run late in the period.
East Burke scored its third quarter touchdown to cap an 80-yard drive on the first possession of the second half. Wilson's 59-yard run set up a 13-yard touchdown run by freshman Robbie McGee.
Maiden threatened to score late in the third quarter. But the drive ended in a pass interception by East Burke's Alex Davidson in the end zone.
The Cavs took advantage of the situation and made another 80-yard drive to score on a 21-yard pass from Chris Collins to Justin Haynes.
Wilson led East Burke with 159 yards on eight rushes and two touchdowns. Fullback Kenneth Gaither carried 13 times for 101 yards for the Cavs.
"We've put ourselves in a position to play for the conference championship," said East Burke coach Mike Biggerstaff. "We've talked about it since the loss to Newton-Conover. "It comes down to the winner next week leading or being tied for the lead. This is a great conference. Our guys feel good about being where we're at."
The Cavs (7-2, 4-1) host Bandys next Friday.
