With one week remaining before the Nov. 3 election, nearly 4,400 people have cast early ballots in Burke County.
That's more than four times the number who voted early in the 2007 school board election and more than half the total number of votes two years ago when the county had its last school board and municipal voting. Although there is unusually heavy early balloting for a non-presidential election, this year's total to date remains far short of the 23,000 who cast ballots in the 2008 election.
Voters this year can cast ballots at two locations, both in Morganton.
As of Monday afternoon, nearly 1,900 had voted at the former Burke County Board of Elections' office in Old City Hall, now the home of the History Museum of Burke County at 201 W. Meeting St.
Slightly more than 2,500 voted at the board of elections' new office in the Foothills Higher Education Center at 2128 S. Sterling St. People going there should use the entrance opposite Zaxby's restaurant.
Both locations are open for early voting from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. weekdays through Friday and from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Today is the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot by mail. Absentee ballots must be back in the board of elections' office by 5 p.m Nov. 2.
People can register and vote at the same time during early voting. The prospective voter must show a form of identification and proof of address.
