The hard work for the first season of Draughn High varsity football finally paid off.
The Wildcats got their first victory on the varsity level with a 47-34 win at West Caldwell High.
"We're just as excited as we can be about winning tonight," said Draughn head coach Scott Lambert. "West Caldwell did a super job. I'm proud of our kids and assistant coaches. The kids played hard all year and it paid off tonight. I can't praise them enough."
With Draughn receiving the opening kickoff, the offensive shootout began.
Draughn went on a nine-play drive, ending with a 21-yard run by Jordan Moore. The extra point failed, leaving the Wildcats with a 6-0 lead.
The Warriors responded, on an eight-play drive with quarterback Ryan Corpening scoring on a 14-yard keeper. The PAT by Gabriel Tobias gave West Caldwell its first lead 7-6.
The shootout continued for Draughn with Adam Manns finishing a seven-play drive, with a 2-yard run. A two-point conversion run by Camden Young put Draughn on top 14-7.
In second quarter action, the Warriors put up 21 points on the scoreboard with all three scores for West Caldwell tying the game.
The Wildcats stayed in the game with Moore receiving a 65 yard pass from Tyler Powell and Moore scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game from 34 yards out. Draughn kicker Dusty Abernathy made both extra points in the second quarter. The halftime score for this offensive shootout in Catawba Valley Athletic Conference action was 28-28.
With the Warriors receiving the second half kickoff the first turnover of the game took place on the fifth play of West Caldwell's drive. Draughn's Alex McGee recovered a Warrior fumble near midfield.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats had their first turnover on the following drive. Manns fumbled the ball away to the Warriors. West Caldwell took advantage of that mistake with Corpening finishing a five-play drive on a 1-yard run. The Draughn defense fired back blocking the extra point to keep West Caldwell's lead at 34-28.
After that last score, it went all down hill for West Caldwell.
Powell finished a nine-play drive with a 1-yard run, and a PAT by Abernathy put Draughn on top by one, 35-34.
On the first play, of the following drive for West Caldwell Keith Loomis grabbed an interception from Corpening.
With Loomis getting that turnover, the scoring continued for the Wildcats. Young finished a 12-play drive with a 10-yard run to extend Draughn's lead 41-34.
With both teams trading punts for the first time in the game, Moore put the game away.
Moore grabbed two interceptions to stop both West Caldwell drives. One of those interceptions was returned for 19 yards to the end zone to put the final margin at 47-34.
Young was the leading rusher for Draughn with 131 yards on 15 carries. Powell went 3/4 in passing throwing for 97 yards, with the long 65-yard touchdown pass to Moore. Tucker Beck also got two receptions for 32 yards.
