Incumbent school board member Sam Wilkinson of Valdese now faces no opposition in his run for re-election.
Dianne D. Mobley of Connelly Springs said Monday she is leaving the race.
"After careful deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy from the Burke County Board of Education election," she said in a prepared statement.
"I sincerely hope that credibility, confidence and integrity will soon be restored to the school board," she continued. "Students and teachers must be the No. 1 priority. Burke County has an excellent school system and our teachers do an outstanding job of educating the children of Burke County.
"It is time to move forward here in Burke County."
Mobley is the third person since Aug. 1 who has dropped out of the Nov. 3 election in which voters will fill four seats on the Burke County Board of Education.
One week ago today, Elizabeth "Liz" Peterson of Morganton dropped out of the race for the Western District's unexpired term. David Barnard resigned from the board with more than two years remaining on his term. The school board appointed Nebo businessman John Aulgur to the seat, but he is not running in the general election.
Throwing her support to retired school principal Susan Stroup, Peterson said, "Her commitment to our schools and children is unquestionable. I believe that she will be a good steward of the dollars available. Her actions and commitment to our community and her accountability platform are in line with mine and many others in our county."
Board chair Tracy Norman also is running for that Western District seat, as is William "Bill" Crump of Morganton.
Crump took up Joseph Poplin Sr.'s offer to pay the filing fee for anyone running for a Western District school board seat. Crump said on Monday he remains committed to the race and will see it through to the end.
Justin Tate of Morganton withdrew on Aug. 1 from the competition for a four-year term representing the Western District. Tate endorsed Catherine Thomas of Morganton. The other candidate is Linda Kay Minich of Morganton.
"Regardless of who is elected, she has to keep an open mind," Tate said at the time. "Just keep a fair and open mind … to treat everybody in the county with proper respect and fairness."
Because they withdrew after filing for the races, Mobley, Peterson and Tate's names will appear on the ballot.
Bradley Truitt of Morganton withdrew from the Central District race before the filing period ended on July 17.
The remaining candidates in the Central District contest are incumbent Buddy Armour, Creag Allen Hanson and James O. Stamey, all of Morganton.
The early-voting period for the Nov. 3 election begins Oct. 15.
