The Burke County Sheriff's Department is searching for a man who attempted on Friday afternoon to rob the BB&T bank branch at 301 S. Center.
Detective Sgt. Rodney Norman said a white male, believed to be in his 40s, entered the bank at approximately 1:15 p.m. and handed a bank teller a note.
"The note said, in effect, 'Give me your money and if you don't do it you'll be the first to die,'" said Norman.
The bank teller said she gave the man some money with a dye pack included. After apparently recognizing the dye pack, the man left the premises on foot without taking the money, said Norman.
Witnesses at a nearby tattoo business told officials they saw the man flee behind their building. Police found articles of clothing they believe the suspect ditched, but the man remains at large. Police do not have a description of any vehicle.
Their search and investigation continues.
People with information about the attempted robbery and the suspect's identity are asked by the Burke County Sheriff's Office to call (828) 438-5500 or the Crimestoppers Hotline at 437-3333.
