The Morganton Department of Public Safety chief and Burke County sheriff each submitted a request Wednesday for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to look into the possible misappropriation of funds from the Fraternal Order of Police.
In a press release Thursday morning the Morganton-Burke FOP said its secretary/treasurer, David Elroy Curry Jr., was suspended and later expelled from the lodge.
Morganton Chief Mark Tolbert said the Morganton-Burke Lodge No. 23 of FOP discovered that funds were missing.
“And in response to these allegations and the potential misappropriation of funds there will be an investigation,” Tolbert said.
Speaking about the missing funds, Tolbert said a Morganton Public Safety detective resigned last week.
Tolbert did not name the officer who resigned.
No charges have been filed.
Tolbert said the FOP would release further information surrounding the missing funds at 8 a.m. Thursday. He declined to comment further on the pending investigation.
Sheriff John McDevitt said Tolbert asked him to submit a letter also because some of the violations may have occurred in the county.
McDevitt’s letter went to District Attorney Jay Gaither’s office.
The FOP is a national organization composed of more than 325,000 sworn law enforcement officers.
“We are committed to improving the working conditions of law enforcement officers and the safety of those we serve through education, legislation, information, community involvement and employee representation,” the FOP’s website states.
McDevitt said the local lodge focuses on helping the needy in the community. Efforts include passing out food baskets annually around the holidays.
