The first day of the filing period for the May primary election saw a smattering of candidates enter local races.
On Monday, Republican Warren Daniel and Libertarian Richard Evey, both of Morganton, filed for N.C. Senate District 44, which is currently held by Republican Jim Jacumin. Democrat Beth Jones of Lenoir is expected to file in Catawba County.
Democrat Aaron Scott of Connelly Springs filed for N.C. House of Representatives District 85, which is now held by Republican Mitch Gillespie of Marion. Democrat Beth Ostgaard of Marion is expected to file in McDowell County.
And Democrat Jim Cates of Morganton filed for N.C. House District 86, which is now held by Hugh Blackwell of Valdese.
Incumbent Democratic Clerk of Court Mabel Lowman filed on Monday to keep her job.
The filing period for party-affiliated candidates will end at noon Feb. 26. Unaffiliated candidates can file up until June 25 and write-in candidates until Aug. 4, because they don't have primaries.
