After a grueling two days of Western 3A Regionals at St. Stephens High School, five Burke County wrestlers earned invitations to wrestle in the state 3A wrestling championship Feb. Friday and Saturday in Greensboro Coliseum.
Patton High School's undefeated David Cook won all four matches to end up as the No. 1 seed out of the West in the 152 weight class.
Freedom High School's Mason Webb also won four matches, upsetting the No. 1 seed in the finals to earn the No. 1 seed in the 189 weight class.
Freedom High School's Trever Miller came in as the No. 3 seed, but will go to Greensboro as the No. 2 seed, because he won his first three matches to gain the 145 finals.
Freedom's two consolation semis' wrestlers, Andoni Mejia and Marcus Kincaid, overcame some top-notch competition to advance to the consolation finals and a trip to Greensboro as No. 3 seeds in the 135 and 171 classes, respectively.
The top four finishers in each weight division are eligible to join the final four from the East, Mideast and Midwest to compete in the state championships.
The 26 schools at the West regionals included powerhouse teams such as Enka, Tuscola and West Henderson from the mountain counties and St. Stephens, Fred T Foard and Hibriten from the foothills.
This is the first year when Morganton's Freedom and Patton high schools were in the 3A regionals. The Patriots were 4A last year and Patton was a 2A school. Both Burke schools were well represented this year, each bringing 10 wrestlers to regionals.
After Friday night's tough early action and Saturday's elimination matches, Patton had a chance to place four wrestlers in the final four, but the consolation semifinals knocked out Tyler Goins, DeQuan Hayden and Grayson Ethridge, all of whom lost to higher seeds in their fifth competition of the weekend.
