East Burke High School's Tanner Anderson won the state high-jump title at Saturday's 1A/2A/3A North Carolina indoor track championships in Eddie Smith Indoor Arena on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.
Anderson's 6-foot-10-inch leap beat South Rowan High School's Keith Grant's jump by 2 inches.
"Tanner went out of the competition at 7 feet," said his coach, Odell Williams of East Burke. "He is a competitor. The young man refuses to lose."
Williams continued, "I knew it was going to be a good day after he cleared his two opening heights.
Anderson's winning jump puts him currently at No. 3 indoors nationally. His jump of 7 feet, 2.5 inches last spring placed him at No. 2 all-time in North Carolina and No. 4 nationally.
Patton High School's Zach Cole finished fourth in the state finals high jump with a 6-foot-2 leap.
Patton High senior John Schilkowsky finished as runner-up in the boys 500-meter dash event with a time of 1:06.77, just 33 hundredths of a second behind Highland Tech's Aaron Tribble.
Patton High's Julia Singley finished in fourth place in the girls 1,600-meter run. Her time was 5:33.30.
Patton's team finished 12th and East Burke's 17th in the boys' team scores.
