Animal control sets traps for wild dogs

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Burke County Animal Control caught two wild dogs this week, and several more traps are laid for any additional wild dogs.
Lt. Steve Massey said wild dogs killed a few pygmy goats in the Snow Hill Church Road area. Pygmy goats are approximately the same size as a medium-sized dog.
Animal control officers have also laid traps in the Settlemyre Road area in Drexel, Massey said.
Wild dogs are not uncommon to the area, Massey said. Usually an abandoned litter of puppies, or puppies born under abandoned buildings, can cause problems.
Massey said animal control encounters wild dogs frequently. They are also known to kill chickens.
The pygmy goats in the Snow Hill Church Road area were in a fenced area, Massey said. He suggested using hog fences instead of just electric or barb wired fences for pygmy goats.
Massey said owners of livestock have the right to protect their livestock.
The captured animals are held for a five-day period in case someone claims them, Massey said. After that period, the animals are euthanized.
