Offering more than just weight loss, They Way In group at Mull's Grove Baptist Church, 5106 Burkemont Road, provides encouragement through the scriptures.
Judy Phillips leads the small group, mostly women, through a short nutrition program coupled with simple exercises, a healthy treat and devotion on Monday evenings at 5:30.
They Way In begins with weighing individuals to record losses or gains. Later they share a devotion that provides encouragement for participants struggling with physical weight loss or motivation. Monday night's devotion from Proverbs provided an opportunity for the group to share morsels of wisdom from the scripture. Phillips remarked, "This applies to our eating and our health."
As far as eating is concerned, Phillips said, "We follow the American Diabetics Association recommendations and each person chooses their own number of calories.
"I am not a nutritionist or a diabetic," added Phillips, a former food service director, "but I do use the diabetic plan to live by."
Entering their third year of losing weight together, Phillips said, "We are determined to keep this going."
Harriet Norman attended from the first. She lost nearly 43 pounds. "I follow the plan and it is easy if you stick with it," she said.
Phillips said, "I probably have lost 21 pounds in two years and I'm thrilled with that." Losing weight at a slower pace can help someone keep it off, she added.
Each week they collect a food kitty. Each participant brings nutritious snacks like fruit and water along with $1. The week's biggest loser wins the kitty.
Losses are referred to as Moments of Glory. Some lost one to three pounds while Teena Norman lost 5 pounds in her second week, bringing her total weight loss to 11 pounds.
Janie Duncan shared that she cut out soft drinks from her diet. "You can eat what you want in moderation," she added.
Phillips said the group always is looking for new members. Five showed up last week, including Kim Orders, who heard about the group from friends.
"I am trying to lose weight and thought I would give this a try," Orders explained. She said the information seemed a little overwhelming at first, but believes it will help.
"This is a wonderful plan for anybody to follow," Phillips said.
