Delve into Waldensian history with the Old Colony Players’ annual “From This Day Forward” outdoor drama, which runs every Friday and Saturday starting this week and running through Aug. 14.
“From This Day Forward” is an annual performance at the Fred Cranford Outdoor Amphitheater that dramatizes the Waldensians’ journey from their native land of the Cottian Alps of Italy to settling in Valdese. The Old Colony Players have performed the play, written by Burke County native Fred Cranford, annually since 1967.
Vickie Hyde, general manager of Old Colony Players, said there are a few minor changes to the script, but the show should be “wonderful” this year.
Director Gennifer Hogan returns for a second year and has been working closely with Cranford’s wife, Hyde said. One of the changes includes incorporating the Waldensian dance in the play again.
Hyde said directors are often given the option to direct for more than a year, but often take a break after two or three years because of the time commitment to the play.
Hyde said auditions occurred in May and the selected actresses and actors began rehearsing immediately afterward, giving them almost two months to prepare for the annual event.
“From This Day Forward” is rated PG-13 for mild violence. The drama starts at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 14.
Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students (8-years and older) and seniors, and $10 for children younger than 8-years or for groups of 15 or more. Tickets are available on site by check or cash. Advance tickets are available at the Old Rock School office, 402 Main St., Valdese, 879-2126.
