Probation officer charged with drug trafficking

A state probation officer from Caldwell County was arrested Thursday after investigators caught him in the act of illegally delivering prescription pills.

James David Franklin, 44, of 3973 Callie Court in Lenoir was charged with felony trafficking in drugs, opiates by possession. He is confined under a $100,000 secured bond and his first court appearance is scheduled for today.

Franklin remained silent, kept his head down and averted his eyes Thursday afternoon as an officer escorted him out of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Becky Weatherman said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducted a five-week investigation leading up to Franklin’s arrest. Additional charges are pending.

Weatherman said Franklin was caught delivering 120 hydrocodone pills to an undercover officer on Airport Rhodhiss Road.

Sheriff John McDevitt said authorities seized a 2007 Dodge Durango and firearm.
