As an educator at East Burke Middle School, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the students, teachers, staff and parents who have been so generous during our community-service projects.
Back in December 2009, EBMS students kicked off our yearly canned-food drive for East Burke United Christian Ministries. This canned-food drive has been a tradition for EBMS for over 15 years. Our students and parents collected 4,000 cans of food and $188 in donations. Many of the people who donated are themselves going through tough economic hardships due to unemployment.
Then last month our students showed their generosity by participating in another community-service project that would benefit the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. In less than three weeks, our students collected change that amounted to $1,935. This money was donated to a non-profit organization called Charity Water.org. Charity Water's mission is to provide clean water to Third World countries by digging wells and providing water filters to those who do not have access to clean water. All of the money collected by East Burke Middle will go to the victims of the Haitian earthquake; none will be used for Charity Water's overhead expenses or salaries.
Many of our students and their parents could have used that money for themselves, but were moved by the tragedy of what happened to our neighbors in the south.
In conclusion, thank you students, parents, teachers and staff for your generosity.
Our young people never cease to amaze me.
