On every first Tuesday of the month, seniors gather at Denton's Chapel for food, fun and fellowship called Together Tuesdays.
After prayer and a devotion with prayer led by Frances Branch, the group is led in activities including games. This past Tuesday, nearly a dozen seniors came out for bingo.
Pastor Alan Wilson said they started the senior gathering at the first of the year.
"We wanted to do something for our seniors to give them an opportunity to get out into the community," he said.
Both members of Denton's Chapel and other interested seniors in the community are attending, Wilson said.
Carolyn Johnson attends Harvest Praise Church, but was invited by her best friend, Judy Peach, who heads up the senior function.
"I love coming," Johnson said. "It gives us something to do and we also gain encouragement. It is very uplifting and good fellowship."
Johnson was delighted to win the first round of bingo.
"You win prizes, too," she said.
Peach, who called the bingo numbers (frequently adding a little humor on the side), said, "I wanted for a long time to find something that would be fun for our seniors and something they would enjoy."
According to Peach, Pastor Wilson takes seniors on day trips like shopping in South Carolina, seeing the leaves in the mountains and even going to Pennsylvania, but this offered something fun that everyone could join in on at home.
In an area more than five miles from downtown Morganton, Peach said, "They've needed something for a long time in this area. Everybody can't drive to town."
"We don't want to see people just sit at home all the time," she added. "We like to kid around and cut up and let them fellowship."
The fellowship helps some who need it more as they've grown older. Peach explained, "We have several people who have lost their spouses and they needed an outlet."
Along with people's favorite game, bingo, Peach said there's a big checkerboard and people play tic tac toe. There is always a pot of coffee on and typically a sweet treat to eat.
"We have a lot of room to grow and we do hope it will," Peach said.
