The Burke County United Way honored Diann Thomas Tate with the annual T. Henry Wilson Community Builder award.
Tate is retired from the Burke County Public Schools where she served as school media coordinator for 21 years.
In her retirement years she has remained active serving as a member of the board of directors of Burke County Department of Social Services; a lifetime member of the Burke County Chapter of the NAACP, since the age of 12, where she has served as secretary, treasurer and president; on the board of directors of the Outreach Center serving as the community food bank officer and treasurer for Caring Hearts Mission Outreach, where each week she personally delivers groceries to more than 40 households and now serves as treasure to the organization.
Tate said of her volunteer service, "You just step up to the plate and do what you need to do."
The Outreach Center submitted Tate's name for consideration.
