Patton High School's varsity quiz bowl team mowed down its opponents at the Western North Carolina Shootout on Saturday in South Caldwell High School.
The Patton A team won seven straight matches before defeating the Freedom High School A team for the championship. During the day, the Patton A team posted one shutout, 555-0, and outscored all opponents 3,150-930.
Patton A's members are Bradley Hicks, Nick Jenkins, Abby Killam and Michael Welker. Penny Jenkins coaches the team.
Three of the four (Hicks, Jenkins and Welker) were on the Patton team that placed third in the 2009 Western N.C. Shootout and qualified for the National Academic Quiz Tournament's national finals in Chicago.
Welker finished second in individual scoring. Emilia San Miguel, a member of the Patton JV team coached by Regina Lynch, finished among the top 10 individual scorers.
Members of the Freedom A varsity team who lost to Patton A in the championship round are Jonathan Eure, Daniel Gutierrez Jiminez, Forest Ownbey and Caide Wooten. Because they had a 6-2 record, they finished the tournament behind runnerup Cave Spring High School of Virginia (7-1) — a team Freedom A defeated in a semifinal match.
