The town of Valdese could soon be looking for a police chief.
Valdese Police Chief John Suttle is retiring April 30, but will return to part-time duty for a transition period starting June 1.
Town Manager Jeff Morse said he convinced Suttle to return part-time to give the town time to find someone to replace him.
"I just don't want to be without a chief," Morse said.
The position will be vacant for a month, but Morse said he will appoint someone as either acting chief during that time or as lieutenant until Suttle returns.
Morse said the department won't miss a beat.
"Nothing's going to change," he said. "We still have a great police department."
Suttle, 60, said he has a lot of things he wants to do. He said his retirement will be a gradual one. He said the town has been good to him and working with the people in the town has been great.
The chief said it's his understanding that the door will remain open if he finds retirement isn't for him and he wants to return full-time.
If he decided to come back full-time, however, Suttle said he would have to give up his retirement from the state.
Suttle retired as an State Bureau of Investigation agent in September 2000. He went to work as a lieutenant with the Burke County Sheriff's Office and then took the job as Valdese police chief in September 2004.
Morse said the town will advertise the job to get a good cross-section of applicants. The salary range for a police chief in Valdese is $50,724 to $76,086, according to town officials.
